Chapters 7-9
When Jem gets his trousers back, he tells Scout about them being reswen. When he was caught in the fence they got ripped, but when he went to get them back, they were sewn up, but not neat like a womans hem, but like a mans.
When the children decide that they are going to send a letter to the person leaving them gifts in the tree, they decide to put it in the knot hole. Once they reach the tree, they find that there is cement in it, closing up the hole. Mr. Nathan Radley cemented the tree because he said it was dying, but I think he did it to keep Boo from having contact with the children.
For the first time in a long time, it snows in Maycomb county, and since the kids have never seen snow, they decided to build a snowman. Ms. Maudie and Atticus think its funny but that it shouldnt represent the neighbors in case someone gets offended.
That night, Miss Maudies house catches on fire. Everyone is out trying to douse the flames and save belongings, but Jem and Scout where told to stand on the corner of the street, out of the way. After Jem, Scout and Atticus got home, Atticus pointed out that Scout had someone elses blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Jem knew immediately that it was Boo who had wrapped them in it. Atticus said, "Do not let this inspire you to further glory Jeremy" meaning, dont do anything to or mess around with Boo. Just leave him alone.
Atticus saves Miss Maudies rocking chair because that is the most important thing to her. she sits in it every day. if it had gotten burned in the fire, she would have been more upset over the chair than the house.
When atticus says to not let the discovery of the blanket inspire jem to further glory, he means dont mess with him, try to get him to come outside, or anything, just leave him alone. I think Jem will really want to but wont just because he doesnt want
Atticus mad at him.
