Web Quest
For my web quest, I reseasrched the author, Harper Lee.
In my research, I learned that Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama. She was born into a large family as the youngest of four children, in a small town. Her parents were very well known. Her father was a lawyer, a member of the Alabama State Legislature, and also owned part of the town newspaper. Her mother, on the other hand, didn't have a good reputation, but was known for suffering from a mental illness called Bipolar Disease. Snce many people believed this, it made it to where she rarely left the house.
Lee's childhood friend was Truman Capote, known back then by the name of Truman Persons. You see, Truman and Lee, who shared different interests and beliefs, also shared difficult home lives. Lee because of her ill mother and busy father, Truman because he lived with his relatives after being abandoned by his parents. At school they were bullied. Truman was often picked on for being a sissy and the fancy clothes that he wore, and as his closest friend, Lee stepped up to defend him.
Later in life, Lee decided to study English Literature in college to help her further her dream of becoming an author. In college, she was known for being a loner and an individualist, but later joined a sorority. Eventually, she started to help the school newspaper with its humor, and soon became editor of the paper itself. Wanting to be like her father, sheapplied to law school, and was accepted, but dropped ouyt the first semester fully believing she was supposed to be an author. This is very important to remember while reading because of two paths, she chose the one that she fully believed in, and followed it with a passion, and eventually gave us To Kill a Mockingbird.
Still following her dreams, 23 year old Harper Lee moved to New York. Unaware of it at the time, this move made To KIll a Mockingbird a reality. Lee, after moving to New York, was reunited with her childhood friend Truman Capote. They began reconnecting, and one christmas, Lee was invited to Capotes house for christmas, seeing as to the fact that Lee would have no one to celebrate it with. That year, Lee got the best present of all. Truman's gift to Lee was to support her for a year so she could have the ability to write full time!
With the help of her friend, Lee published To kill a Mockingbird in 1959. This novel was so great, it was adapted to screen in 1962. That same year, her novel also won the Pulitzer Prize and many other prestigious awards.
In this book, I believe that themain characters childhood will be riddled with bullying, a tough home life with a sick mother, and a devoted best friendd by her side every step of the way.
