Customs in the 1930's
While at the Customs station, I read about the 1930's and how girls were supposed to behave and be seen in society.
As a young white girl growing up in the 1930's, there were many customs that you must follow. We follow many today, like being well behaved and well mannered, both at home and in public, as well as not being loud, but some were very different than what we follow in todays society. Back then, you shouldnt speak unless being spoken to. Children especially were supposed to be seen, not heard. Politics and buisness was the buisness of men, cooking and cleaning was the buisness of women.
According to the artical, you were " one of the most disagreeable and obnoxious characters to be met in society" if you were a young girl who was "too forward with others, too bold or perty. One who speaks too loudly or laughs and jokes or tells stories in order to be heard by anyone other than her immediate companions."
Today, if we were to follow the same guidelines, I would definetly be a bad example. I am well behaved in public, always saying please and thank you, yes ma'am and no ma'am, etc. On the other hand though, if I have an opinion on something that I hear, I make it known. I love laughing and joking with my friends and having a good time, and sometimes, we have enough fun we attract attention in public, but I believe that as long as you enjoy yourself and no harm is done, there is nothing wrong with it. You should be yourself, not what people want you to be.
